Purchasing kitchen appliances can be a mind boggling task, especially if you haven’t done your research! Multi-functioning appliances are the way of the future, so for those of you looking to embrace healthy cooking with gadgets to assist you in the kitchen, keep reading, because the day of slaving over a hob for hours cooking or cleaning a multitude of appliances is gone!

Nobody wants a kitchen cluttered in appliances, so below you’ll find an array of gadgets with multiple integrated functions. For instance, instead of purchasing one unit for blending and another item for food processing, you’ll see a unit that integrates both functions. Consumers should demand more from their products and their hard-earned cash. The day of buying single-functioning units should be practically gone.

With this list, you won’t be a target to retail marketing and gimmicky gadgets, this article will ensure you are educated on reasonably priced items of the highest quality and functionality. Let’s be thrifty, clever consumers and save time, money and space with such gadgets, while also making your friends and family jealous of your cooking and your elegant appliances.

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This has no impact on you as a consumer if you choose to purchase any of these products, but I may earn for my efforts in reviewing these products. Also, please note that I only recommend the highest quality products that I have either purchased or would personally invest in.

Blending gadgets

Calling all blending enthusiasts, yes I’m talking to you:

  • smoothie / juice / cocktail lovers
  • bakers who seek a smoother quick batter, or want to grind their ingredients into a flour
  • cooks who want to accelerate the time it takes to chop foods up
  • parents looking to make unprocessed homemade purees for their children
  • food enthusiasts who love homemade sauces or dips, such as salsa, guacamole and even curry lovers who want a smooth, declumped sauce
  • coffee enthusiasts who seek to grind their own fresh coffee in the morning for the coffee-shop experience from the comfort of their home!

Whatever your food or drink of choice is, owning a blending appliance will make short work of your time spent in the kitchen. Not only that, it will also save you money spent buying such foods and drinks, smoothies and coffees aren’t cheap and they all add up significantly in the week, especially if you buy them almost daily! Just think how much do you spend on caffeinated drinks or even smoothies in a week?

This is where the Breville Blend Active Pro Food Prep Personal Blender with Mini Food Processor and Spice Grinder takes centre stage. It operates as a multi-functional unit; not only is it a personal blender, but it also comes equipped with the capability of processing food. This unit offers 4 main functions:

  • blend
  • chop
  • puree
  • grind

For those of you who are uncertain of what a personal blender is, essentially it’s a blender base which comes with bottles; the ingredients are added to the bottle, the bottle is screwed onto the blade and blended within the bottle. The blade is then disconnected from the bottle and the normal drinking lid applied. Hey presto, you now have a delicious smoothie / juice / sneaky cocktail with only a blade and the bottle to clean; so say sayonara to the ordeal of cleaning the blender pitcher and lid. It’s an excellent solution for people in a rush in the morning or those who dislike cleaning equipment.

Often you’ll find both of these options being sold as separate units, which often means that many kitchens are having extra storage space consumed with food processor and a blender, while clever consumers who purchase the above unit avoid this conundrum.

Cons: The seals can be a bit troublesome according to some reviews, but replacements are available.

Coffee gadgets

We are a nation of coffee lovers, and there’s no better evidence to substantiate this than the increasing prevalence of coffee shops popping up virtually everywhere. When people consider investing in a coffee maker, they are often deterred by the cost of not only the machine itself, but also the pods that need to be purchased.

Many European coffee connoisseurs purchase on average 3 coffees in a week, which if you estimate that each one costs €3 or €4, that equates to €15 or €20 a week, and a whopping €780 or €1040 a year! The story isn’t much different in the US. People aged between 25 – 34 spend on average $2,008 in a year, while the 35 – 44 age category indulge in $1,410 worth of caffeinated drinks per year.

If this doesn’t justify you investing in your own coffee making appliance, then I don’t know what will! Below are a range of coffee making gadgets to accommodate almost any coffee drinkers desires and budgets!

Coffee machine:

The Russell Hobbs 20680 Buckingham Filter Coffee Machine, 1.25 Litre is an Amazon Choice product when it comes to filtered coffee machines. With a 50% faster brewing function compared to other coffee machines, you can brew yourself a freshly filtered coffee in lightening speed, or simply programme it to have your fresh cup of coffee waiting for you in the morning; this is particularly valuable if you’re in a rush in the mornings or if the thought of having to make coffee before you’ve even had coffee feels like purgatory. It’s also easy to use and clean, aesthetically pleasing and has received primarily positive reviews.

Cons: You are primarily limited to one type of coffee with this appliance, in comparison to units which can produce a variety of coffees.

The Nespresso Essenza Mini Coffee Machine is an ideal solution for those who enjoy the luxury of having up to 40 different hot and cold drinks to choose from, so there’s an immense variety on offer to keep your taste buds tingling and your body hydrated. I think I’d have to try them all! Fortunately, you don’t have to endure the inconvenience of going to specialist stores to purchase the pods as they are widely available in most supermarkets and online. Again, it is another Amazon Choice product, meaning a vast quantity consumers have been highly satisfied with the product. The unit itself is rather elegant looking and compact in size. Did I mention it features the all-important automatic flow stop function?

Cons: You do need to remove the drip tray for taller cups. If this could be an issue, you could always opt for one of the larger units in the range.

The Breville All-in-One Coffee House, Espresso, Filter and Pods Coffee Machine with Milk Frother is the elite option when it comes to coffee machines – think coffee shop standard equipment. It really is a coffee connoisseur’s dream appliance. With this unit, you have an all-in-one system to facilitate authentic espresso, filter coffee and capsules as well. It comes equipped with all the bells and whistles, including integrated steam wand for the perfect milk foam, blooming function for a more balanced coffee flavour, a large 1.7L water tank and over 40 drinks to choose from. Another great feature of this is that it can fit most travel mugs, so you can still have you coffee fix while on the go. All of this while being aesthetically beautiful and an Amazon Choice product. It’s bound to make your friends jealous – don’t be shocked if you become the epicentre of social gatherings!

Cons: While it does offer elevated functionality compared to the 2 previous units, it is the more expensive option.

Tip: Purchasing coffee pods in bulk works out financially cheaper than buying small boxes at a go.

Cooking gadgets

Air fryers:

With the advent of fast food restaurants came the desire for people to cook such food at home. With this hunger came a surge in deep fat fryer sales. Unfortunately, many people didn’t realise that frying food in oil is an extremely calorie-dense method of cooking, a behaviour to which many health professionals have attributed the rise in obesity to.

Fortunately, people became aware of this issue and many people banned the deep fat fryers from their homes. Manufacturers responded to this by developing a healthier alternative which could fry food with as little as 1 – 2 tablespoons of oil as opposed to completely submerging food in buckets of oil. Some healthy fryers can in fact fry food with virtually no oil worth talking about.

For those of you who seek a healthier alternative to fast food and deep fat fried foods, or simply looking to eat healthier and effortlessly cut fat and calories from your diet, you can’t go wrong with the Amazon Choice Philips HD9220/20 Air Fryer with Rapid Air Technology for Healthy Cooking, Baking and Grilling. It boasts the ability to cook foods using 90% less fat, sales of greater than 7 million for the product, and it also has the Amazon Choice accolade and excellent reviews. This air fryer is not just a fryer, it also incorporates the ability for versatile cooking, with the functionality to grill, bake and roast food, all while being an easy to clean unit. Such versatility is a rare find!

Cons: You will need to purchase extra accessories for some of the functions, such as the grill pan. However, if you mainly plan to use it for frying, this isn’t an issue.

Multi cookers:

An article featuring multi-functional appliances would be incomplete if it failed to feature multi cookers. If you were to individually purchase each appliance to cook what a multi cooker can, you would not only be short on money, you’d also have sacrificed a shelf or 2, if not 3. Consider multi cookers a one-stop solution for virtually all of your cooking needs and desires. If you’ve ever browsed through catalogues of multi cookers, you’ll be shocked at just how many features they have to offer.

The Drew&Cole; CleverChef 14-in-1 Intelligent Digital Multi Cooker is a prime example of this and is yet another Amazon Choice product which boasts magnificent reviews. For a unit that encompasses an outstanding 14 functions, it’s incredibly reasonably priced. No more than myself, you are probably wondering what the 14 functions are that this multi cooker unit offers. Well the unit actually comes with 17 pre-set programmes including: steam, stew, soup, roast, poach, bread rise, bake, fish, sauté/brown, rice, pasta, slow cook high, slow cook low and yoghurt, DIY, delay timer and keep warm function.

With a 5L capacity, it can effortlessly cook for approximately 2 – 6 people. It also has a simple interface with dedicated buttons for each pre-set programmed function; this is a welcome addition in comparison to some of the competing appliances, which have so many buttons that they are the equivalent to operating a space ship!

Cons: If you don’t think you’ll utilise many of these functions, it may not be worth the investment.

Grilling gadgets

Many households invested in the George Foreman grills when they first came onto the market. They’re an excellent invention, but can be somewhat limiting in terms of the meals and snack that can be created. That’s where the 3-in-1 grilling appliances play a role.

I personally own a 3-in-1 appliance, and I use it so frequently that it rarely gets a chance to gather dust. The beauty of a 3-in-1 unit is the versatility in foods that can be created. I’ve recently been going through a phase of toasted sandwiches and soup for lunch. Who doesn’t love a hot, crispy toasty after all? By simply alternating between the toasted sandwich plates and the panini plates, it transforms the meal, so I never suffer the monotonous experience of being bored with my food.

One of the best 3-in-1 units on the market is the Salter EK2143 Deep Fill 3-in-1 Snack Maker with Waffle, Panini and Toasted Sandwich Plates. It comes with interchangeable top and bottom panini plates, waffle plates and toasted sandwich plates. Your only challenge is coming to a decision on which one you want to use, because the sky is the limit with this array of plates! What’s astounding is the fact that you can purchase a grill with one function for the exact same price as this Salter appliance, which incorporates two whole extra functions for the same price!

Cons: While it does claim to be a deep fill unit, a number of reviews state that it can lead to contents leaking out if filled too much.

If you’re looking for other essential items to assist your cooking experience and make life in the kitchen a breeze then head over to healthy eating kitchen gadgets – small utensils for some must have gadgets!

Do you own any of the above units or plan to invest anytime soon? Perhaps the money you spend purchasing drinks from coffee shops is something that could shock you; have you evaluated your spend on coffee or are you too afraid of the result? Hi Sharon,

Well I don’t know where I’d be without my personal blender.

I typically have a smoothie on a daily basis. I just throw in some frozen fruit, a scoop of protein powder, a spoonful of nuts and seeds, some oat milk, and then I’m good to go.

It’s funny that you mention the seal on these types of blenders, as I have had to order replacements twice in the space of 16 months, but no big deal.

The idea of an air fryer has always appealed to me, but to be honest I only really consume fried foods as a takeaway.

However, I guess that’s because I try to be as healthy as possible most of the time, but the air fryer certainly seems like a great option for “healthy” fried meals (is there such a thing?) at home.

A great read as always.

    Hi Partha,

They are a great invention, especially the fact you cut out the ordeal of cleaning extra blender jugs etc. That sounds like a tasty combination that you’ve got going on there! I’ll have to add it to my list. Oh that’s disappointing, I guess they might give over time.

Yes, you could fry an array of items in the air fryer and they’d be healthier than ones that are saturated in fat, e.g. chips, wedges, chicken etc.

Thanks for your comments and feedback!

This article is for me! haha! Seriously though, I am definitely a person who likes to use the least amount of utensils and cooking gadgets as possible. We are possibly going to purchase a new blender and the one you are talking about looks very good. I also like the coffee machine. Oh, I honestly wish I could get both of those right now, but I might have to wait a little. Love your blog! I will definitely come back to it.

    Sharon · 20/06/2020 at 3:33 PM

    Hi Manuela,

I’m glad to hear it! You can always add it to your wish list! Or perhaps just go and treat yourself, why wait! The personal blender is definitely the way forward though, less hassle in terms of cleaning.

    Thanks for your feedback,
    Sharon

I heard a lot about air fryers, all good things – is it right?
Could you recommend the best product regarding the price/quality ratio?
I want to give it a try, thanks!

Hey Sharon! I absolutely love how you did the math there on how much coffee is consumed regularly to find out how much you can save if we just bought ourselves a coffee machine. A few years ago, I was in this exact predicament where I was shocked to know how much I was spending on a monthly basis just on my caffeine intake! I only wish, I had this post to read back then when I was picking out my perfect coffee machine!

Besides that, I always eat healthy but my weakness is fries!! Just for that, I bought myself an air fryer and have not looked back since! I have tried making other items like chicken and spring rolls in it too and all turned out great!

InstaPots are a huge hit these days as well and anything that saves time in the kitchen as you said! Loved all your picks- thank you for such a well-written article!

    Sharon · 21/06/2020 at 1:55 PM

    Hi there,

Wow, thank you so much, I truly appreciate it!

Yes, you’re not alone there, it’s probably because it’s not a large cost and people neglect to consider how all those coffees add up! between that and a lack of knowledge/awareness, it’s all a formula for a depleting bank account.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the air fryer, I love hearing feedback from people on appliances.

Hopefully you learned a few valuable tips from the article!

    Best wishes,
    Sharon

I love healthy cooking and gadgets so thanks for this great article on Healthy cooking with gadgets!!! I love my panini maker so much but the one you have here looks better. I could use a new one so I will check out the one you have featured here.

    Sharon · 21/06/2020 at 1:58 PM

    Hi Alyse,

Good to hear, I’m glad we agree on the gadgets and you found it valuable to read! Also, thank you for sharing your own opinion and experiences. Do indeed, you won’t find a better utensil and you’ll have a world of fun food opportunities open to you!

    Best wishes,

Tom · 21/06/2020 at 10:22 AM

Hi Sharon,

Another article that I think a lot of people will make hungry, and also want to purchase some of your gadgets. I am particularly interested in the coffee and grilling gadgets.

I love coffee but at the moment it is only the instant kind, I need to buy myself a better way of making coffee and I like the Russell Hobbs kind, I’m not much of a frothy kind of guy.

The 3-in-1 unit that you discuss as a grilling gadget sounds perfect. Especially when I have guests over (in my covid bubble of course). I’ll see what I can do with that one.

Another great article and thank you for sharing. Keep up the great work.

All the best,

Tom

    Sharon · 21/06/2020 at 1:59 PM

    Hi Tom,

Thank you so much for your comment. I hope the article was of interest and use to you and you found some nuggets of information to take away!

You may be better off without the froth, and any of those syrups for that matter. The sky is the limit with the 3-in-1 and I’m slightly surprised how popular they are amongst the visitors to this site.

If there’s anything I can be of assistance with, don’t hesitate to reach out!

    Best wishes,

    Hi there,

Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the suggestions I provided in the post. I think we all love the air fryer. As for the blender, I’ve made a promise that I’ll dust mine off this month!

If there’s anything I can be of assistance with, don’t hesitate to reach out!
